Static Websites Are Serious Infrastructure

Small publishing architecture can have large preservation advantages.

GitHub journal: an original editorial note, maintained as a version-controlled Markdown file.

Complexity has a cost

A database-driven site can be valuable when users need accounts or transactions. But a personal portfolio, historical archive and research journal mostly publish read-only information. A dynamic content manager introduces authentication, patches, backups and more ways to fail.

Static does not mean primitive

Prebuilt pages can include accessible search, structured metadata, client-side filtering, interactive timelines, print styles, RSS feeds and a source index. All of these can be generated at build time and uploaded to ordinary shared hosting.

The tradeoff

Editing requires rebuilding the site. GitHub Markdown and a build workflow make that process transparent. Readers receive fast pages even if the author is absent, and the site remains portable across hosts.
