Release Notes Need Evidence

Version numbers mean little without explaining what changed and how it was checked.

2026-10-28·GitHub journal · Issue 001·release-notes-need-evidence
GitHub journal: an original editorial note, maintained as a version-controlled Markdown file.

A version is a claim

A release announcement may mention larger counts or new features. Those statements require definitions: does a record count refer to unique verified items, imported candidates or published detailed profiles? Unclear metrics produce a false impression of progress.

Good release hygiene

Maintain a manifest listing published pages, dataset timestamps, revisions and exact checksums. Separate content changes from code changes. Include known limitations and unresolved issues beside new capabilities.

What to preserve

An archived manifest and build revision should make it possible to inspect the state readers actually saw at publication time, rather than a database that continuously rewrites the past.
