Reading March 21, 1575

A dated deposition is a stronger chronological anchor than a later legend, but its status remains that of a recorded statement.

Historical method: a recorded belief or accusation is not independent proof of the supernatural event described.

Event date versus record date

March 21, 1575 is the date assigned to the opening entry in the translated proceedings. The account discusses earlier conversations and activity. A chronology must not assign the deposition date to every narrated event.

What a transcript can establish

A transcript supports claims about the contents and procedure of a case, subject to transcription and translation quality. It does not automatically verify the literal reality of each reported experience. That is a basic distinction between documentary evidence and an account’s truth.

What to preserve

For each important claim, log the edition, page or folio if available, speaker, date recorded and whether language is quotation or summary. The archive supplies a pointer to the published translation and labels the original-manuscript comparison as a task for further research.
