Fiction, Folklore and the Historical Benandanti

Creative interpretations can illuminate why a historical subject matters while also distorting what the sources establish.

Historical method: a recorded belief or accusation is not independent proof of the supernatural event described.

Narrative compression

Fictional accounts often turn a heterogeneous documentary record into a recognizable order with fixed abilities. That makes for strong plotting but weak source criticism if presented as historical description.

Responsible reuse

A novelist can borrow motifs of fennel, seasonal time, a sleeping body and protective identity without claiming documentary proof of a particular supernatural battle. A bibliography and an author’s note help preserve the boundary.

Why an archive should care

Popular retellings are themselves evidence of modern reception. The archive can study what was added, lost or rearranged as the narrative traveled into new media.
